Primate Tracking

Rwanda is very famous for its  rare mountain gorillas  in the Volcanoes National Park, but Rwanda is so much more than just gorillas, Rwanda is also home to 13 different primate species, including most famously the  chimpanzees of Nyungwe Forest as well as different species of monkeys – colobus monkeys,  golden monkeys , L’Hoest’s monkeys, owl faced monkeys, Dent’s monkeys, blue and vervet monkeys – as wells  olive baboons and the nocturnal potto and bushbabies.

Chimps are man's closest relatives, they are very sociable primates and stay in extended communities moving around every day, foraging for food or occasionally hunting smaller animals. When tracking chimps in Nyungwe, you will usually hear the chimps' sounds before you see them as they make noises that echo through the forest as they communicate with each other in some sort of bonding ritual.

Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest begins very early, at 5.30am, and can take  anything from an hour to several hours depending on where the chimps are located that day. The chimps in Nyungwe tend to range far deep into Nyungwe Forest. On locating the chimpanzees on the day, as is the case with tracking mountain gorillas, trackers spend a maximum of one hour with them observing the chimps feeds, playing, mating and going on about their daily lives. After the 1 hour, chimp trekkers are then asked to leave the chimps in peace and return to the start of the chimp tracking trailheads. 

The terrain in Nyungwe is quite  steep, slippery and muddy especially during th rainy seasons of March, April, September and October. When you travel to Nyungwe for chimpanzee tracking armed with a chimpanzee tracking permits, we recommend that you carry suitable footwear, long sleeved shirts and trousers to protect you from any stinging nettles. A certain level of fitness is also required as you may be walking through thick vegetation for a few hours before you locate the chimpanzees.

Please note that Golden monkeys cannot be tracked in Nyungwe, instead Golden Monkeys  are found and tracked in Volcanoes National Park as well as Gishwati Forest. When tracking Golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, there are two groups which can be tracked, one on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi and the other in the bamboo forest on the slopes of  Mount Sabyinyo. This is also a another golden monkey trek that departs from the Kinigi park headquarters everyday.

Colobus monkeys can also be seen when on a primates walk in  Nyungwe . The colobus monkeys can easily be identified because of  their black and white colour and long hair – a dream for primates photographers. Also found in Nyungwe are owl-faced monkeys with beak-like noses, Dent’s monkeys, blue monkeys and vervets.

L’Hoest’s monkeys are endemic to Albertine Rift and can be found in Nyungwe and Gishwati Forest. They have a dark coat with a white beard and live in small groups dominated by females, with a single male like the case is with silverbacks for gorilla families.

Nyungwe National Park

 Nyungwe  Forest is  extremely rich in biodiversity and a rare gem. Nyungwe is endowed is with  flora, fauna and teeming with wildlife, including  chimpanzees as well as 12 other species of primates and most notably the L’Hoest’s monkey which is endemic only to the Albertine Rift Valley.

With 15 trails on offer in Nyungwe, there is plenty of activity options for visitors to Nyungwe, including walking across a suspended bridge in the middle of the forest, the Nyungwe canopy walk, walk to the Isumo waterfalls, and many other walking trails.

Primate tracking, especially the chimps and colubus monkeys is what brings most visitors to Nyungwe Forest, before they connect to Lake Kivu and onward to Volcanoes National Park to track the rare mountain gorillas, a memorable lifetime experience.

Nyungwe is so much more than just primates, Nyungwe hosts 1,068 plant species and 140 orchids. The birdwatching in Nyungwe is among the best in Africa with 322 birds species including Red-collared Babbler and 29 other Albertine Rift Endemic species. Butterflies are also a common sight, with at least 120 species.

There are 75 known mammals in Nyungwe, such as the cerval cat, mongoose, congo clawless otter and leopards. Sightings are very rare though but possible when tracking primates in Nyungwe.

Tea plantations border the edges of Nyungwe Forest park, with a habituated troop of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys at Gisakura as well as forest fringe birds. As an additional excursion, visitors to Nyungwe can participate in from crop to cup tea harvesting and tasting experiences.
