Gorilla tracking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is a once in life time adventure experience. Gorilla trekking is a are experience to meet the gorillas in their natural habitat in the volcano ranges of Volcanoes National Park in North Western Rwanda. Tracking gorillas is an unforgettable adventure experience. Seeing the rare mountain gorillas as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, mingling, sleeping, moving in a group is a life changing encounter for most first time and returning gorilla trackers. Each gorilla permit is only valid for 1 day and is non-transferable. Each gorilla permit will allow to spend a maximum of one hour with the gorillas. You may of course funds permitting trek the gorillas as many times as you wish to have encore of this life time changing gorilla tracking experience.
Mountain gorillas are the largest primates that grace the earth. There is 2 types of gorillas, the lowland gorillas found in Kahuzi Biega National Park of DRC and the mountain gorillas which predeominantly live in Virunga National Park of DRC, Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda and Bwindi National Park of Uganda. Tracking gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda is very safe and accessible, however tracking the mountain gorillas in Virunga DRC is subject to the security situation prevailing in this part of DRC as the security situation can be fairly fluid in this part of the Virunga ranges.
 
As of 2022, there is roughly 1000 mountain gorillas with approximately 600 located in the Virunga mountain ranges alone. The mountain gorillas population is increasing in large part due to the cordinated gorilla conservation efforts between the host governments, communities and NGOs of Rwanda, Uganda and DRC.

 Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park hosts well over 12 gorilla families or gorilla groups which are habituated for gorilla tracking, with a few more gorilla families habituated only for gorilla scientific research purposes. Each gorilla family consists of at least one silverback male gorilla, as well as several female gorillas and young baby gorillas.

The current gorilla groups or gorilla families are;  Susa gorilla family , Igisha gorilla family, Karisimbi gorilla family, Sabyinyo gorilla family, Amahoro gorilla family, Agashya gorilla family, Kwitonda gorilla family, Umubano gorilla family, Hirwa gorilla family, Bwenge gorilla family, Ugyenda gorilla family and Muhoza gorilla family.

Eight gorilla  tracking tickets or gorilla permits are allocated for each gorilla group or gorilla family on each day. The limitation of numbers to 8 is intended to keep the experiences as intimate, private and non-intrisuve as possible for the gorillas.. This means therefore that only 96 gorilla tickets or gorilla permits are available per day for tracking the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. We therefore highly suggest that you book your gorilla permits through us well in advance before gorilla permits sell out, especially during the peak travel months of July, August. September, December and January.

Visitors gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi at 7am, and are allocated a family group on the day according to fitness levels, as well as being briefed on protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas.

Gorilla treks or gorilla hikes to locate the gorilla families can last anything from 1 hour to 6 hours for the Susa gorilla family with tends to range very high up in the mountains. However luggage porters are available at a small fee to assist with carrying luggage, trek packs as well as offering a hiking had to trekkers who might need such help on the day. However nobody should be put off gorilla tracking as you will be assigned a gorilla group according to your request or fitness levels.

As part of the conservation and corporate social responsibility mission, 10% of the monies generated from sale of gorilla permits or gorilla tickets is allocated to local communities for purposes of building local health centres, local schools, developing local markets, local roads and any other local community priorities. RDB has in  place a gorilla compensation fund in the event that gorillas damage the crops of the local farmers. The reason for the fund is to ensure peaceful coexistence of the mountain gorillas and the locals who in the past used to kill the gorillas as retaliation for destroying their crops.

The revenue from gorilla permits or gorilla tickets offers employment for many locals, from rangers and trackers to porters, drivers and staff at accommodation facilities near the park.

There is much more than gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park. After gorilla tracking, visitors have the opportunity to track golden monkeys the next day, or for visitors interested in tracing the footsteps of Dian Fossey, her tomb is a 30-minute drive from the  Kinigi park headquarters from where you would start a  two or three hours hike through the forest before arriving at the grave.

The annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony is an exciting opportunity for visitors to Volcanoes Park to meet up and name gorillas of their choice. The Kwita Izina gorilla naming event is usually preceded by  guided gorilla exprience tours where visitors gets a chance to mingle with park staff meet park, gorilla conservationists as well as  attending cultural evenings. 

Conservation organisations currently working in Rwanda include Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, The Gorilla Organisation, International Gorilla Conservation Organisation, Gorilla Doctors and Wildlife Conservation Society.
