GAME DRIVES IN AKAGERA
Get to spot the big five while on a morning or evening game drive in the Akagera.
This is your only chance while in Rwanda of seeing the the Big 5 Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino as well as the Zebra plus other wildlife, birds, flora and fauna. Akagera park has an abundance of wildlife including but not limited to antelopes,Topi, Eland, Roan and Impala. You can also catch a glimpse of the Zebra, Maasai Giraffe, Bush Buck and Baboons
BIRDING
Akagera National Park and Nyungwe are the best place in Rwanda for avid birders with more than 500 recorded species being resident in the Akagera park.
This is your best chance of spotting the Pied Kingfisher, Fish Eagle, Grey Crowned Cranes, Open Billed Stork, Cormorant, as well as the Egret and on a very lucky day, you may also see the shoebill in the northern swamps of Akagera.
COMMUNITY FARMING WALK.
Get to learn first hand the local farming methods of Rwandans that live in the Eastern Province of Rwanda that borders Akagera Park. Join us on this community farming walk and get a chance to interact with local Rwandans as they go about their daily lives. We take you on a guided tour of the local communities and give you the chance of photographing the local long horned Ankole/Rwandan cows..

BOATING IN AKAGERA
A boat safari cruise is one of the best ways to see Akagera's stunning beauty. The boat safari will take 1 hour sailing on Lake Ihema, Rwanda's 2nd largest lake. You will get a chance to spot hippos and crocodiles as they come down on the banks of the river to drink in the scorching African sun. A boat cruise is another opportunity for you to see plenty of birdlife.that calls Akagera home.
You may also get a glimpse of leopards and elephants while on the boat cruise along lake Ihema.
NATURE WALK SAFARI.
One of the best ways of exploring Akagera Park is on a guided walking safari on foot along the southern edge of Akagera. The nature walking safari gets you up close and personal with the animcals, plants, wildlife as well as birdlife, flora and fauna. On the walking safari you will meet up with local community members that are engaged in apiary, farming and making handicrafts to supplement their daily income.
It is an exciting 2 hours walk that will get you to appreciate Rwanda and its peoples more.

TRADITIONAL CANOEING
Join local fishermen for a canoeing trip on a nearby lake and learn the traditional methods of catching fish.The fishing lake is only ten minutes drive from Rhino lodge and the canoeing is offered as one and two hour options.

WALK THE LINE
Hike along the electric fence that was erected along the park to minimise human-wildlife conflicts and see how people and wildlife live harmoniouslybesides each other.

LOCAL MARKET & CUISINE
One of the best ways to spend your afternoon at Akagera Rhino Lodge is to meet and interact with the local community. You will be introduced to a local family that will go shopping with you to the local market to buy food stuffs and ingredients for preparing a local gourmet meal. You will then return to prepare one of the local dishes and have absolute fun tasting what you have prepared with guidance from a local.

MAKE LOCAL BEER & HONEY
One other enriching activity to undertake would be learning how to make beer out of banana, locally known as “Urwagwa”. You will then also have a chance to explore how bees skilfully enter a locally made beehive, and how honey is harvested without upsetting the bees. You will also learn how honey is treated and preserved for much later use.

GREATER NYAGAKONJI HALF-DAY TOUR
For adventure seeking guests to Rhino Lodge Akagera, you get an opportunity to hike the cliffs of Nyagakonji hills.The half-day tour is a rare opportunity to explore and learn the history of Eastern Rwanda plus a chance to meet the locals who call the Akagera area home. Get to participate in a local Rwandan dance as well as forklore and if you prefer go canoeing in a traditional fishing boat in Lake Gishanda.
To ensure the community directly benefits from your visit, half of the fee you pay for this activity is given directly to the community and the local dancers.

KARAMA’S HERITAGE TOUR
We invite guests to Akagera Rhino Lodge to take a private guided tour of the community living in the southern sector of Akagera . The heritage tour gives a deeper insight of how locals live and get on with their daily lives. On the tour, participants will get to meet with the heritage tour leader Joseph Karama who has a wealth of 13 years experience in community tourism as well as conservation in game parks.
Note that these tours are booked in advance and only offered on weekends.

MUNINI-NDEGO BIKE TRAIL
Akagera Rhino lodge organizes mountain bike riding tours using local bicycles that take you through the breathtaking scenery of the southern part of Akagera National Park, along the eastern plains of the trio lakes of Ihema, Nasho and Kibare.
The Rhino Lodge provides the bicycles, helmets, water, and snacks. Guests are encouraged to bring their own suitable clothing, including jackets, sunscreens, sunglasses and camera.
