Rwanda, the bridge between the eco-systems of the Congo and the Great Rift Valley is home to 324 of the world’s 700 mountain gorillas. Rwanda is a nature and gorilla lover’s paradise with friendly people, fine food, good accommodation facilities and a very rich cultural heritage. Rwanda has beautiful beaches and an archipelago of secluded islands, making it the perfect holiday destination.
The landscapes in this lush green country are truly amazing. Visit the Akagera National Park, with fantastic accommodation facilities at Akagera game lodge, bordering with Tanzania and dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of Akagera river. Lakes Kivu, Burera and Ruhondo, close to the gorilla tracking centre of Ruhengeri are a traveller’s gems, deep blue waters ringed by steep hills and high waterfalls.

Nyungwe National Park, has the largest block of Afro-Montane forest in East and Central Africa extending over 1000 square kilometres across the majestic hills of south west Rwanda. Get a chance to visit Banda eco-tourism village, nature walks through Kamiranzovu giant swamps, experience the beautiful cascading waterfalls, guided forest walks to catch a glimpse of hundreds of bird species, various plant species and colobus monkeys-the world’s largest ever recorded arboreal troop of black& white colobus monkeys.

The forest has more than 200 different types of trees, including the giant lobelia and a host of colourful orchids. Nyungwe is most alluring for its 13 primates species, including the chimpanzee, the L’Hoest anddelighfully acrobatic Angola colobus monkeys. Nyungwe is a bird watcher’s paradise with almost 300 bird spedies including the great blue turaco. The reserve can be visited as a day trip from the towns of Butare and Cyangugu
Parc National Des Volcans in the northern part of the country, towering up to 15,000 feet and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest ,notable amongst them “The Virungas” is a natural habitat to Rwanda’s most prized endowment-The Mountain Gorilla. Trekking through the Virungas is a fascinating experience of nature at its best. It’s offers the traveller the opportunity of intimacy with the rainforest, trails through the national park, sounds of colourful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkeys, plus proximity encounters with the mountain’s elusive buffaloes and elephants. At the base of the Virungas is the bustling market town of Ruhengeri and on its outskirts the natural bridge @Musanze-a solidified lava flow relic of the volcanic activity that shaped this area of nature’s organic beauty. In the vicinity are the wonderful Lakes Burera, Karago and Ruhondo.

Rwanda’s lakes offer travellers rewarding experiences of rich African lifestyles. Fishermen ply the water in dugout canoes with un-altered designs for centuries, while colourfully dressed ladies smoke traditional wooden pipes and strum sweetly on stringed traditional ’guitars- locally called-iningire .
The bird life is fantastic, pelicans sail  across the open lake waters, crested cranes wander in the surrounding swamps, while jewel-like malachite kingfishers hawk silently above the shore.
Three resort towns, Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu, are connected by a wild roller-coaster road that meanders through lush green fields and relic patches of misty rainforest  to offer sweeping views over the blue water. It is one of the most awesome road journeys in all of Africa. There is also hire boat service on the lake connecting the three towns.

Gisenyi, the most developed of these resorts, is less than 1 hour’s drive from the Parc National des Volcans. The resort is on a white sandy beach lined with swaying palms and colonial-era hotels that exude an atmosphere of tropical paradise. At Kibuye, to the south of Gisenyi, tourist activities are centered on a modern lakeshore guesthouse overlooking pine-covered hills seemingly transplanted from the  Swiss Alps.(Source:Rwanda Development Gateway)
