Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge Newsletter November 2011 Gorilla News: most of the families have moved lower down after the young bamboo shoots, making the treks less demandng. Both the Susa and Hirwa twins are doing very well and cause great excitement amongst the guests. Gahunda, the silverback from the Sabyinyo family getting a little frisky in his old age! On two separate occasions now he has given some of our lady guests a little tap on the backside. Hirwa has a youngster that is just full of beans, hates being ignored and sulks when not given enough attention. He often rushes towards the guests beating his chest, unfortunately he is only knee high and therefore his chest beating doesn't get the same reaction his father gets. He had a little video camera on his head and one of the gorillas took interest in the flashing red light on the from of the video recorder. The gorilla came and sat in front of Andrew and pushed his finger on the camera lens trying to figure out the flashing red light. A recent client at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge had an interesting encounter whilst out Gorilla Trekking. They came across the largest Silverback gently examining an injured bird, with offspring looking on. The Silverback picked up the injured bird, turned it over and carefully examined it, showing it to the young gorilla with him, he then gently laid the bird back down before moving on. Their guide who is a senior guide in the Park had never seen this behaviour before. Photo courtesy of Jon Weber We have started working to support the School for Deaf Children in Kinigi, close to the lodge. Yesterday we started a 2 month culinary apprenticeship for two of the deaf students. Both of the learners are orphans and reside at the school. The school has now closed for the year so the students are available until January, our aim is to teach them sufficient culinary skills to hopefully enable them to be able to find work in a kitchen at one of the hotels in the area. The students who graduate from the school find it difficult to find employment due to communication issues in the workplace, so the school tries to teach them skills which will enable them to earn a living through crafts. Hopefully we can provide them with a further avenue. Today was the first baking lesson and the students made orange and cardomom cookies for the guests. Delicious! The children at the school are also making Christmas Crackers for December. Each Cracker also has a small picture drawn by the children on them. We hope that this will create an awareness of the school and will be a talking point among guests. We have also just taken in four students from the Lycee Ikirezi De Ruhango School in the Southern Province on a two month hospitality internship. The students will rotate through the kitchen, housekeeping, restaurant and reception. We hope to share the magic of the Virungas with you sometime soon. | www.kariburwanda.com |
